Ingredients

For the Gratin
  • 2 pounds potatoes choose starchy varieties like Russets for the creamiest texture
  • 2 cups heavy cream provides that rich, velvety mouthfeel
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese adds a nutty flavor; feel free to substitute with cheddar
  • 4 cloves garlic minced, adjust to taste
  • 1 teaspoon salt enhances all the flavors
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper adds just the right amount of heat
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme or 1/2 teaspoon dried
For Topping
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs creates a delightful crunchy texture; Panko works well
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter helps the breadcrumbs brown beautifully
  • Additional cheese optional, for a cheesier crust if desired

  • Baking dish
  • mandoline or sharp knife
  • Mixing bowl
